Abstract

Religious democracy is a relatively new term in Iran's political discourse. It can be understood as a mode of governance in Islamic countries where citizens, within the framework of Sharia teachings, actively participate in elections, and the administration and control of society in the political sphere are carried out by the people's representatives in accordance with religious and Islamic values. By elucidating the important position, sensitive role, and fate-determining power of the people, and the Islamic system's genuine reliance on Islamic foundations on one hand and its dependence on the people's will on the other, these are considered the two fundamental elements of religious government in Iran. Such a government does not seek dominance through force and suppression; rather, it deems the presence of the people in many political and social spheres (especially in the establishment and continuation of its sovereignty and political authority) as necessary and attributes extraordinary importance to it. One of the distinguished characteristics of this type of government is the divine nature of sovereignty and its delegation from God to the people. This research seeks to answer the main question: What is the position of religious democracy in elections? It also aims to answer the following sub-questions:

What is the position of jurisprudential foundations in legitimizing religious democracy?

What is the concept of religious democracy in the view of the two leaders of the Revolution (Imam Khomeini and Ayatollah Khamenei)?

What is the relationship and position of elections in religious democracy?

The materials for this research have been gathered through library research and by employing a descriptive-analytical method.
