An examination of the juristic (fiqhī) implication of the phrase “mā uḥibbu”

Abstract

Among the expressions that have consistently raised questions and ambiguities for researchers in the field of hadith—and even for those who engage with narrations only cursorily—is the implication and apparent meaning of the phrase “mā uḥibbu” as issued by the Infallibles (peace be upon them). This article seeks to provide the reader with an initial and precise understanding of this expression by examining its instances of usage, analyzing the views of jurists, carefully considering its lexical content, and paying attention to the various roles and capacities of the Infallibles (peace be upon them).
It is evident that the significance of this research is highly determinative for an accurate understanding of narrations and for our interpretive conclusions. In many cases, a jurist’s legal ruling changes due to differing interpretations of the phrase “mā uḥibbu.” Both seminary and university researchers can benefit from the findings of this study.
The originality of the present article lies in the fact that it gathers the various relevant variables associated with this expression and offers an independent and distinct synthesis for deriving its implication. Moreover, an effort has been made to rely directly on the texts of the narrations and the statements of jurists so that the reader’s inference rests on a firm and well-grounded basis. Ultimately, after multiple examinations, it becomes clear that the object of “mā uḥibbu” cannot be an obligatory act; rather, its primary apparent meaning indicates reprehensibility (karāhah). Even those rulings of prohibition that have been inferred from this expression are due to contextual indicators that cause a departure from its primary apparent meaning.
