The implications of dog walking and dog ownership from the perspective of Shiʿi jurisprudence

Abstract

Dogs have historically been indispensable companions to humans, assisting in a wide range of tasks. Undoubtedly, in today’s world, the scope of services provided by dogs has expanded even further. Dogs aid humans in various areas such as detecting narcotics and explosives, locating individuals trapped under rubble, navigation, diagnosing diseases, herding livestock, carrying loads, and numerous other functions. Beyond these practical roles, dogs have also entered the most private spheres of human life, sometimes being treated as family members, fulfilling certain emotional needs of their owners. Therefore, it is necessary to examine and clarify the position of dogs within religion, jurisprudence, and related issues.
Islam recommends certain animals, such as pigeons and roosters, but dogs—despite their many beneficial qualities—are restricted within Islamic law. This raises important questions about the rationale behind such limitations. Despite this necessity, a comprehensive study addressing all aspects of dogs has not yet been conducted. Accordingly, the present research thoroughly addresses various issues including impurity (najāsat), ownership, keeping, buying and selling, and the rights of dogs. In some cases, primary rulings and secondary considerations have been distinguished and analyzed, providing guidance for both aspects.
