Abstract

Within the Islamic educational system, ḥijāb is more than a merely external obligation; it represents a comprehensive strategy for organizing human life at both the individual and social levels. Drawing upon Qurʾānic verses and the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), this study employs a descriptive–analytical method to examine the relationship of ḥijāb with concepts such as faith (īmān), modesty (ḥayāʾ), chastity (ʿiffah), prosperity (falāḥ), and social security. It seeks to demonstrate how this religious obligation exerts influence across multiple layers of human life.
The findings of this research reveal a three-dimensional understanding of the functions of ḥijāb. The first dimension is its protective role: by reinforcing modesty and chastity, ḥijāb simultaneously generates psychological security for the individual and social protection for the community. In this way, it preserves individuals’ psychological energy from the strain of being constantly exposed to the gaze of others. The second dimension concerns the ethical–social function of ḥijāb, situating it within a triadic moral system alongside chastity and modesty. In this framework, chastity functions as an inner moral disposition, modesty as a restraining moral force, and ḥijāb as the outward structure that embodies these virtues. The absence of any one of these three elements undermines the effectiveness of the others. The third dimension pertains to the civilizational consequences of this ethical system: the gradual erosion of the culture of modest dress—often imperceptibly—weakens the foundations of the family, diminishes emotional fidelity, and erodes social capital.
The study concludes that ḥijāb should not be understood as an isolated norm but rather as part of a broader semantic network in which faith, self-restraint, and social well-being are deeply interconnected. Accordingly, the institutionalization of a culture of ḥijāb requires, prior to superficial measures, a wise articulation of its inner logic and a clear demonstration of its inseparable connection with modesty and chastity. The research recommends that educational strategies derived from the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) be prioritized within cultural programs through persuasive approaches rather than coercive imposition.
